Solid or flashing?
A solid light means the car has stored a fault code. It is usually safe to drive to the shop, but do not ignore it. A flashing light usually means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter — reduce speed and get it checked as soon as you can.
Check the easy things
Make sure the gas cap is tight and clicks. Notice whether the car runs rough, hesitates, or smells like fuel.
