Motorcycle Maintenance Before Riding Season
Motorcycles · · TT Sport Garage, Carol Stream
A practical spring checklist for Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki riders around Carol Stream before the first long ride of the season.

After a bike has been parked all winter, the first ride of the season should not start with just thumbing the starter and heading out. A short inspection catches most problems before they turn into a roadside stop.
1. Tires: pressure, tread and sidewalls
Check cold tire pressure against the number in your owner's manual. Look over the tread and sidewalls for cracking, flat spots or anything embedded in the rubber. Tires that sat all winter often lose pressure and can develop flat spots.
2. Brakes
Squeeze the lever and press the pedal before you ride. Both should feel firm and return normally. Look at pad thickness where you can see it, and listen for grinding or dragging. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, so if the fluid is dark it is due for a change.
3. Fluids
Check engine oil, coolant and brake fluid. If you did not change the oil before storage, change it now — old oil carries acids and moisture that are hard on an engine.
4. Battery and electrical
Batteries lose charge while a bike sits. Make sure the engine cranks strongly, then check headlight, brake light, turn signals and horn.
5. Chain and sprockets
Check chain slack, look for tight spots or rust, clean and lube it. Hooked or worn sprocket teeth mean the chain and sprockets should be replaced together.
When to bring it in
If the bike has been stored for a long time, has a known issue, or is overdue for service, a professional spring inspection gives you a clear picture before the season gets busy. Call TT Sport Garage at (630) 310-4400 to book a time.
